The
short untold, but true story of MOHOC and how it
came to be...
First off MOHOC only
started to be a curious hobby back when
the internet first separated from it's
BBS (Bulletin Board System) roots back when
the web became popular as HTTP in relation to
browsers, and people started to "surf" the
web (around 1990). MOHOC was not even close
to being "MOHOC" for quite some time and I was still only
messing around online with modems and my ISP
supplied web space for the first few years.
I had the amateur website refer back to my
home PC via IP forwarding for the true site
(you
see I wasn't able to upload the questionable
content to the ISP without getting blocked)
It was fun and creative enough that I wanted
to get out on the real web with a hosted
account where I could
freely express myself, and back then that
was not only expensive, but not a home
product like today. I paid through the nose
for what I remember to be about 100 meg of
space on an AT&T server, which almost took a
lawyer to understand the contract. First off I had to
come up with a URL, so after what seemed like
an eternity of straight pounding at names
and ideas for a good URL, MOHOC.com was the
winner, which turned out to be a simple acronym for "My Own
Home Operated Computer" derived from
the above IP forwarding.
Once
MOHOC was secured and online I wanted to
grow, so I enlisted a few
others and after a couple of months we took
off with MOHOC Online Magazine. At the time
it was one of the
first and only true magazines online. It was changed
drastically every month, included a ton of
cool crap with new
articles as often as we could find real
stuff to write about. We did features and interviews with real
people (some of which were actually famous
in there own right) like the owner and truck
"the American Monster Truck", Mrs. Codner
aka "the Kat Woman" and many more including
amateurs from all over the world!
MOHOC was such a success
that it was talked about on UK television,
won an award from "linked in" (at that time
it was a link sharing system, not the
LinkedIn of today) as the fastest growing
web magazine of the day, mentioned in a few
printed magazines, as well as all
over the web. As a matter of fact, if you
search the web today you will still find MOHOC Online Magazine
mentioned on may websites and within pages
of all types.
Now after so many years we have grown to be a
popular website design and PC consultants.
We
work with many corporations and have done so
many websites you cant shake a stick in any
one direction without hitting something we
have done. From a full site to a
single graphic image, we are all over. Easy,
my head isn't as big as the web, so I wont
be insulted if you say, "Who the hell is
this guy?" It's not important.
